A quieter material palette
A few well-chosen materials can give a project more character than a long list of finishes.

Materials
Choose a common thread
Begin with one material that belongs to the place. It might be existing timber, exposed brick or a stone threshold. Let new choices respond to its tone and texture.
Use repetition with purpose
Repeating a finish across connected rooms can make a modest space feel coherent. Change the scale, direction or detail where a different atmosphere is needed.
Consider how it ages
Look beyond the first photograph. Ask how a surface will feel after regular use, how it can be cleaned or repaired and whether its changing appearance is part of its appeal.
